How to Get Around in Bali

Bali is not a small island, so you will definitely need transport to explore comfortably. If you’re planning a trip and wondering how to get around in Bali, this quick guide covers the best options in Bali — from scooters and private drivers, to Gojek and Grab taxis.

In popular parts of Bali like Canggu, Uluwatu and Ubud, traffic can become extremely congested during peak hours, so travel times are often much longer than they appear on maps. Knowing which transport option is best for comfort, safety, and speed is essential.

Here are some transport options for getting around in Bali:

Online taxis – scooter and car

Using Gojek in Bali and Grab taxi services in Bali is one of the cheapest and most efficient ways to travel around the island. These ride-hailing apps in Bali are similar to Uber and are widely used by both locals and tourists. They are a great way to get around, either on the back of a scooter or in an air-conditioned car.

While online taxi services have been banned from picking up in some parts of Bali, you can usually walk a few hundred metres and get picked up nearby. Download the apps before you arrive to make getting around easier from day one.

Official taxis

Previously, it was recommended to use official taxis like Bluebird. However, many unreliable taxi companies have created names and logos that look very similar to “Bluebird”. If you want an official taxi, the best option is usually to book a Grab taxi in Bali or use Gojek in Bali through their official applications.

If you do choose to use a taxi, make sure you negotiate the price in advance.

Unmarked taxis

You can find drivers at small taxi stands in many parts of Bali. The prices to each destination are usually listed. However, be aware that these prices are often inflated.

Private drivers

Another option is to use a recommended private driver in Bali. You can either hire a driver in Bali for a trip from A to B, or book a Bali driver and guide for a half-day or full-day adventure.

If you’re doing some exploring, hiring a private driver in Bali for around IDR 800,000 is a fantastic option. The driver will take you from place to place and wait for you while you explore. This is especially convenient for visiting destinations like Ubud, Uluwatu, Sidemen, or multiple cafes, beach clubs, and temples in one day.

Airport Transfers

For airport arrivals, booking a private driver in Bali in advance can make your arrival much smoother, especially late at night or during busy holiday periods. Scooters

Exploring Canggu and Bali on a scooter is cheap, convenient and a lot of fun. We love riding our scooters! You will see entire families — and even whole shops — transported on scooters.

However, riding a scooter is not for everyone, especially if you’ve never ridden one before or are not used to local road conditions.

If you do decide to rent a scooter, make sure you wear a helmet every time you ride.

You will also need a scooter or motorcycle licence in your home country, plus an International Driver’s Permit, which you can organise from the official motoring body before leaving home. In Australia, you can get it from the NRMA. In the USA, try AAA.

These documents allow you to ride legally in Bali. Without them, not only can you be fined by the police, but your travel insurance may also be invalid in the event of an accident. There are lots of sites selling fake IDPs online, make sure you get a real one!

If you’re feeling nervous, using Gojek in Bali to order a scooter ride is a great way to experience riding through Bali safely while still enjoying the tropical breeze and scenery.

Scooter rentals in Bali typically cost around IDR 70,000–150,000 per day depending on the model, location, and length of rental.

Bicycles

Hiring a bike is a fun (and tiring!) way to explore different areas of Bali. They are a great option if you don’t feel comfortable riding a scooter.

Be careful with your valuables and avoid placing important items in bicycle baskets. It’s also best to stay off the main roads where traffic can become hectic.

Walking

It’s best to save walking for quiet villages or areas surrounded by nature. While the local government is investing in upgrading infrastructure, there are still many sidewalks in Bali’s popular tourist areas that are in poor condition. You may encounter large holes, uneven paving, or even exposed metal.

For short distances, we recommend using ride-hailing apps in Bali like Grab or Gojek. For longer trips or multi-stop adventures, hiring a private driver in Bali is often the most comfortable and convenient option.
